Table of Contents:
  • What is geological diversity?
  • Importance of Geological diversity
  • Conservation of Geological diversity

We already know that there is three major geographical division of India and within the single geographical division, there is a lot of variation of rocks composition, rocks ages, fault, fold, destruction sites created by tectonic forces; this variation is called geological diversity.

Geological diversity is the non-cultural diversity that evolved in billion years. Geological diversity includes unusual rocks, faults, folds, etc.
The following are geological diversity of India;
  • Greatest Mountain peak of the world
  • Coral reef
  • Rocks variety; age varies from Pre Cambrian EON( Archeae genesis) to Cenzoiek Era( Aryan Period)
  • Minerals variety
  • Earthquake faults
  • Tsunami and volcanic destruction sites
  • Adam Bridge or Ramsetu

Importance of Geological diversity:
Geological diversity is our heritage and it has multidimensional importance.
The following are the importance:

  • Our history does not start from Indus valley civilization, our history starts from billion years ago.
  • It gives information about our past about the earth's crust formation and evolution, and information about the evolution of life.
  • It is linked with biodiversity.
  • Tourism attraction
  • Valuable to Economy

In India:

  • More than 30 % of stones production is done in India.
  • India get billions of dollars by exporting granite, marble, metamorphic rocks

But geological diversity is being ignored in our country.

  • The stone industries are unscientifically managed and generally not scrutinized by the public and government. It also not has been checked the geological importance of the site before constructing infrastructure projects.
For example,

  • there the dinosaur fossils in kutch areas of Gujarat during the Mesozoic era 200 million years ago.
  • Due to construction work and highways, geological diversity is disappearing very fast.

What can do to conserve geological diversity?

  • Geological history must be conserved through the geological park, changing land use planning, legal framework to conservation,
  • Need complete inventory of geological structure of the country
